Kieran
McManus is a multi-instrumentalist based in Portland,
Maine. His music is based around the lively soulful American
music that sang out from many a beat-up guitar, cellos,
fiddles, frailing banjos, and honky tonk pianos around
the Appalachian mountains in the first half of the century.
Kieran plays guitar, cello, and piano. He first began
with classical piano at age 6, and switched to guitar
when he was 12. Cello came about in the past few years.
While working for the Smithsonian Folkways Music archive
in 1997, Kieran developed a great appreciation for the
rich music traditions of this country. A few years later,
while living in Jackson Hole Wyoming, Kieran participated
in the weekly Hootenanny for 50 consecutive weeks, where
he became inspired by all the great traditional musicians
who performed a diverse array of bluegrass, folk, cowboy
music, and oldtime.
